Sophia University was founded by the Jesuits in 1913, with the mission to build bridges between Japan and the world. Sophia has been a pioneer of international education in Japan, attracting faculty and students from all over the world and has grown to be one of the foremost of Japan’s private universities with a student body of 14,000 undergraduate and graduate students and more than 1,400 teaching staff members. Sophia is located in the heart of Tokyo, where the dynamism of the global city Tokyo can be strongly felt.

Sophia University has 9 undergraduate faculties with 29 departments, and 10 graduate schools with 25 programs. At undergraduate level, all classes in the Faculty of Liberal Arts as well as the Green Science Program and Green Engineering Program in the Faculty of Science and Technology are taught in English. English-medium programs are also offered at graduate level, in Global Studies, Science and Technology, Global Environmental Studies and Linguistics (TESOL). Sophia's international spirit has flourished in its student and faculty exchange programs, which began more than 80 years ago. At present, Sophia University has academic exchange agreements with more than 360 institutions in 75 countries, sending around 400 students to partner institutions every year and welcoming the equivalent number as incoming exchange students. Research scholars and faculty members from all over the world also visit every year, working on collaborative research with faculty and offering classes and special seminars to undergraduate and graduate students.
