Reverend George Leslie Mackay (1844 - 1901) was a Canadian missionary who first arrived in Taiwan in 1871. After settling in Tamsui, northern Formosa in 1872, he engaged in missionary services, education, and medical care for nearly three decades. He held the Christian faith, the practice of love and the spirit of service throughout his life, and was widely respected by the people of Taiwan, who honored him as "Dr. Mackay." In 1882, he established "Oxford College" in Tamsui; this became the origin birthplace of Taiwan Western education including both Aletheia University and Tamkang Middle School. Aletheia University (after Greek ἀλήθεια, ‘truth’) (Chinese: 真理大學) is a private university in Tamsui, New Taipei City and Madou, Tainan in Taiwan. It was founded by George Leslie Mackay as Oxford College. It has close links to the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, and is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Taiwan.
