Niigata University is the largest national university with 13,000 students on the Honshu main island along the coast of the Japan Sea (East Sea according to the Korean name). The bullet train "Shinkansen" takes you from Tokyo to Niigata train station in about two hours passing through mountains in the center of the island. Niigata International Airport has direct flights not only to major Japanese airports such as Narita, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka etc. but also to Inchon (for Seoul), Shanghai, etc.
The City of Niigata has a population of 800,000, but it is characterized by various industries including agriculture. Actually the Prefecture of Niigata is well-known as the producer of the best rice of Japan. Its traditional industries, some of which used to produce hooks, hoes, knives etc. for local use, now produce the case of iPad etc., adjusting themselves to the contemporary needs of the world. Because of these various industries, living costs are reasonable and the living environment is also agreeable, although those from warm countries may first be surprised by the weather in winter while enjoying snow and skiing in mountainous areas.
We are pleased to continue our USCO Multilateral Exchange Program (UME, or Program A) for 2018 April enrollment in addition to the programs under bilateral agreements with various universities in Asia, the Pacific, Europe and America. Enjoy the various research subjects Niigata University provides as well as the living environment and the life with various students not only from Japan (not only from Niigata) but also from many other countries here at Niigata University.

List of study programs that are open for international exchanges

Content Students must submit Niigata University's original application documents through a coordinator at their home university by following the instruction on the application guideline which will be sent to students who have been approved on the USCO system in early October of 2021. Approval on the USCO system means that students are eligible to apply to Niigata University by the deadline set separately in November of 2021 by NU.

◆Aim
The Program for Exchange Students at Center for International Education, Niigata University (NU) provides students from our partner with opportunities to study various subjects at our university for a semester or two.
The exchange students are expected not only to study those subjects but also to develop their capabilities to contribute to the globalizing world in studying and living in different social settings.

(1) Japanese Language Learning
Japanese language subjects are offered from elementary to advanced level. Students who wish to take Japanese language subjects must attend “Japanese Language Subjects Guidance” scheduled prior to the beginning of each semester in order to find out which subjects are available for them. (2) Subjects taught in foreign language (English or Chinese)
As shown in the list of classes on the following website (to be updated), Niigata University offers a number of subjects taught in non-Japanese languages.

(3) Various subjects taught for regular students
These subjects are offered by each faculty or graduate school and are taught mostly in Japanese.

◆Academic Results and Credit Transfer
(1) An official academic transcript will be issued upon completion, and the transcript will include course/subject names, results, and the number of credits earned.
(2) Based on the transcript issued by Niigata University, students’ home university will determine whether to accept transfer of the credits. Students are strongly advised to consult their home university regarding credit transfer before applying to Niigata University.
All Japanese language learning subjects offer 1 credit for approximately 16 sessions, and most other subjects offer 2 credits for the same number of sessions.

◆Time and Term of Study
Exchange students study for either one or two semesters starting Spring Semester of 2022. Students who cannot study for a full semester are not eligible.

2 semesters (April 1, 2022 - February 28, 2023)
Teaching Language Most classes of Niigata University are taught in Japanese language.  The number of subjects taught in English is limited. Students who does not intend to take Japanese language learning subjects should plan carefully before departure, ask for information on course offering in advance, and consult your academic advisor at home about credit transfer. A small number of subjects are taught in French, Chinese or Korean.

There is no fixed requirement for GPA points; however, the applicant must have good academic records which is equal to or more than 2.3 points by JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) scale, and must have sufficient language proficiency in English or Japanese or both in order to be successful in class and to fulfill their academic goals. Instruction Facilities and Other Supports Exchange students have access to university facilities just as regular students of Niigata University including libraries and cafeterias, wi-fi on campus, and on-campus information system.

Niigata University will apply for Certificate of Eligibility to Immigration Services Agency of Japan on behalf of students and will ship them to their home university together with Notification of Admission as soon as they are issued.
After preparing all necessary documents, exchange students should apply for student visa at a Japanese diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate) in their own country. Contact the diplomatic mission in advance and ask what documents must be submitted.

Students must comply with border enforcement and quarantine measures undertaken by the Japanese government and Niigata University to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.
Memo

Following nomination by partner universities, Niigata University will send applicants' universities our original application guidelines and forms. It will be posted at the following website within October 2021 for the spring semester of 2022:

Application guidelines are published in late September for the following academic year (April-March). Application along with required documents must be submitted to Niigata University by coordinators of applicants' universities by deadlines set in the guidelines, which will be around November 15 for Spring semester and May 15 for Fall semester. Notification regarding acceptance will be sent within two months following the deadline. Certificate of Eligibility will be sent to applicants' universities in about two months following the deadline.

Please inform prospective dates of acceptance if the dates would be later than UMAP's Timeline for onlire placement period. It helps students to choose their preferences.
