General Information

Host Institution	The University of the Ryukyus is located in Okinawa, the southernmost prefecture of Japan, and consists of seven faculties and eight graduate schools. Okinawa possesses unique regional characteristics that are shaped by its sub-tropical climate and its history of trade and exchange with the rest of the world during its days as the Ryukyu Kingdom. Taking advantage of its historical background and geographical characteristics, the University of the Ryukyus emphasizes education and research rooted in regional characteristics, including: 1. Coral reef production and biological resources; 2. Tropical agriculture and biotechnology; 3. Advanced medical techniques for subtropical infectious diseases; 4. Information technology centered on Okinawa’s tropical environment, energy functionality, and geographic location; 5. Okinawan history, culture, people, languages and cross-cultural studies and 6. Comprehensive research on the Asian-Pacific region. Content

This program provides students with a deeper understanding of both Okinawan and Japanese cultures and customs. It also gives students the opportunity to return to Japan in the future to pursue graduate studies or research.

*Students can choose either 1 semester study or 2 semesters study

*Academic year in Japan starts from April (Spring semester).

Language Proficiency Requirements

1. Japan-Okinawa Studies Course: Daily conversation level of Japanese or English
2. Glocal Leadership Course: Daily conversation level of English (CEFR A2)
3. Japanese Language Teacher Training Course: JLPT N2 equivalent or above
4. Major Studies Course: JLPT N2 equivalent or above is required basically. However, if the applicant can find an academic adviser who can give the guidance in a foreign language they wish to use, they can conduct their research in the foreign language (English, Thai, etc.). Please contact the Global Education Section in advance.

University of the Ryukyus will accept any GPA students, however, if their GPA is less than 2.30 on a three point scale (maximum GPA: 3.00), they are no longer eligible for scholarships.

Visa Process

1.University of the Ryukyus applies for Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) to the immigration office in Okinawa.
2.University of the Ryukyus receives CoE.
3.University of the Ryukyus sends the CoE to applicants' home university.
4.Applicants go to the Japanese embassy in their country to apply for the Student-Visa by using the CoE.

If applicants write false information in application forms, their CoE is NOT issued.

Please inform prospective dates of acceptance if the dates would be later than UMAP's Timeline for onlire placement period. It helps students to choose their preferences.
