General Information

Host Institution

Musashi University is a small private university located in Tokyo, Japan. We have faculties in Economics, Humanities, and Sociology and graduate schools of Economics and Humanities. About 4,000 students (undergraduate and graduate) are studying under the fundamental educational philosophy – chi to jissen no yugo (the fusion of knowledge and practice). Our intimate campus environment provide students the opportunity to forge close relationships with classmates and faculty together.

International students receive strong student support services and are integrated in educational and social life of Musashi University. There are two popular areas of study particularly interesting for international students at Musashi University – East Asian Studies and Japanese Language.
All international students are welcomed to join any Japanese program. There is no language prerequisite. Students will be placed in one of five levels of Japanese from “complete beginner” to “advanced”, so even if students have never studied Japanese before, they will be welcomed. We also have a tutor system in place, where international students can get help mainly from Japanese student tutors so that they can grow their understanding easily.
East Asian Studies Program is another option for international students. The courses are offered in English about international relationships, economics, cultures, societies and histories about East Asia. Through the EAS Program, the faculty and staff of Musashi University are committed to helping students gain intercultural competence, develop their talents, and contribute as global citizens.
If students seek for the place where they can communicate with Japanese students and other international students, we recommend MCV – Musashi Communication Village. MCV is a place where students gather, enjoy casual conversation and various fun events together using foreign language they are studying. Students get chance to deepen their understanding of other cultures.

The university is tucked within a quiet, residential area of central Tokyo. The campus is within twenty minutes of both Ikebukuro and Shinjuku, famous shopping districts in Tokyo. We believe that students studying at Musashi shall students to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Japan, its people, its culture and traditions.

List of study programs that are open for international exchanges

Content International students are required to choose their courses from recommended course list (which will be available during the orientation). Most of Musashi courses are taught in Japanese, but we have some options which are taught in English. One is the East Asian Studies courses (EAS). Subjects are East Asian Economics, Histories, Politics and so on. We also have the Study Abroad Preparation courses. These are actually for Japanese students who are willing to study abroad, but these contents are also attractive for international students, and it would be a good opportunity to communicate with Japanese students.
We do not require international students to take Japanese Language classes, but we encourage to do so. We have five different levels from complete beginner to advanced.

*Non EAS courses are only for those students with an ADVANCED LEVEL of Japanese proficiency.
*Students at the Introductory and Beginning Levels of Japanese cannot take courses outside of the EAS or Study Abroad Preparation courses.
*In exceptional cases, students at the Intermediate Level may be allowed to take regular university courses. However, approval of enrollment is pending course requirements and instructor approval.
