General Information

Host Institution

The University of Quintana Roo (UQROO) is a young and small university founded in May 1991. At the same time, it is largest and most important public university and holds the largest higher education enrollment in the State of Quintana Roo, which was, until 1974, an underpopulated and isolated Federal Territory, and the last of the Mexican entities to have a higher education institution.

Located on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Quintana Roo is at the heart of the Mayan world, with a millenary history and, at the same time, with a strong and growing indigenous population. Nowadays, Quintana Roo has some of the most important tourist centers in Latin America and the Caribbean, receiving half of all 30 million tourists that visit Mexico every year. Its demographic, economic and ecological transformation has been enormous and the UQROO has grown along with it while contributing to this accelerated development with research and the training of professionals. With a faculty of 232 teachers, 54 of which belong to the National Researchers System of CONACYT, we serve 5,585 students in four campuses located in its main cities: the largest of them in Chetumal, the capital of the state, and the others in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.

Our educational model is focused on student self-learning, comprehensive and global training, professors as facilitators, a flexible curriculum, a multidisciplinary and polyvalent model, and an innovative education. Our academic programs are certified by the national highest standards of academic quality (COPAES, CIEES and CONACYT), and all our Masters and Doctoral degrees belong to CONACYT’s National Register of Quality Postgraduate Programs. UQROO is also certified by the International Quality Management Systems Standards - ISO 9001-2015 - which ensures high quality performance in all its administrative processes.

International education has been a priority of UQROO since its creation, established by its articles of incorporation to be a window to the Caribbean and Central America in the first instance, and then to the rest of the world. Today it has a comprehensive internationalization program headed by the Office of International Affairs and Academic Cooperation, which promotes student, teacher and staff mobility and exchange. UQROO seeks to strengthen academic cooperation with other institutions in Mexico and abroad through more than 80 national and international active signed agreements and is affiliated to ANUIES, the National Association of Higher Education Institutions, as well as to some of the most important academic organizations in Mexico and the world (UDUAL, CONAHEC, AMPEI, UMAP and UNESCO-IESALC, among others). We place an enormous importance in language learning, in the teaching of Spanish as a second language, and also in preserving de vernacular Maya by teaching it and promoting its use.
