List of study programs that are open for international exchanges
The Program for Exchange Students at Niigata University provides students from our partner with opportunities to study various subjects at our university for a semester or two.
The exchange students are expected not only to study those subjects but also to develop their capabilities to contribute to the globalizing world in studying and living in different social settings.
◆Studying at Niigata University
Niigata University is a comprehensive university and provides various classes taught in Japanese and foreign languages (mainly English). It is characteristic of Niigata University that exchange students may study together with Japanese students even if they cannot speak Japanese.

(1) Japanese Language Learning
Japanese language subjects for international students start at JLPT-N4 level.
(2) Subjects taught in foreign language (English, Chinese etc.)
Niigata University offers classes taught in non-Japanese languages.
(3) Various subjects taught for regular students (taught mostly in Japanese)
Students who have advanved level of Japanese (JLPT-N2 or N1) may take courses taught in Japanese with permission by instructor(s).
|Teaching Language||Most classes of Niigata University are taught in Japanese language. As the number of subjects taught in English is limited, students who does not intend to take Japanese language learning subjects should plan carefully before departure, ask for information on course offering in advance, and consult your academic advisor at home about credit transfer. A small number of subjects are taught in French, Chinese or Korean.|
Applicants will be required to submit a separate set of application documents for Niigata University, which will be provided to the officer in charge of UMAP program at applicants' home university.
|Language Proficiency Requirements||

There is no fixed requirement for language test scores; however the applicant must have good academic records which is equal to or more than 2.3 points by JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) scale, and must have sufficient language proficiency in English or Japanese or both in order to be successful in class and to fulfill their academic goals.

|Instruction Facilities and Other Supports||Exchange students have access to university facilities just as regular students of Niigata University including libraries and cafeterias, wi-fi on campus, and on-campus information system. Free pick-up service will be available, and orientation program, which provides important information for international students, is held following students' arrival.|

|Visa Process||Prepare Notification of Admission, Certificate of Eligibility (COE) for Resident Status, and passport, along with any other necessary documents, and apply for a visa at a Japanese diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate) in your own country. Contact the diplomatic mission in advance and ask what documents must be submitted.
Niigata University will apply for COE to Immigration Services Agency of Japan on behalf of students and will ship them to their home university as soon as they are issued.
Following nomination by partner universities, Niigata University will send applicants' universities our original application guidelines and forms. Application guidlines are published in September for the following academic year that starts in April. Application along with required documents must be submitted to Niigata University by coordinators of applicants' universities by deadlines set in the guidelines, which are normally around November 15 for Spring semester and May 15 for Fall semester. Notification regarding acceptance will be sent in within two months following the deadline. Certificate of Eligibility will be sent to applicants' universities in about three months following the deadline.
Please inform prospective dates of acceptance if the dates would be later than UMAP's Timeline for onlire placement period. It helps students to choose their preferences.
